Tanya teaches a Year 4 class, and she doesn't need to use her MIS to know how well her pupils are doing. She knows that results don't tell you everything about ability; she takes pride in knowing her pupils inside out, and that's more than just their latest
test scores.
Whilst busying herself with Harvest Festival, Tanya gets an email from the learning resources co-ordinator, who has been taking part in an online discussion with other schools in the area. The discussion has been about how best to engage more 'resistant' pupils, and what effective school resources can play; one idea is to send 'targeted' messages to pupils when new learning materials on favourite topics arrive in the school. Tanya immediately thinks of Rebecca. She's slightly below average in terms of test results, but what she doesn't know about Egyptology isn't worth knowing.
The following week, the learning resources co-ordinator gets a visit from Rebecca. She got an email about a new CD-ROM on hieroglyphics and she's beside herself with excitement. Tanya also drops a quick email to her parents explaining that this is a broad enough subject to serve as a means for both them and the school to help Rebecca develop, in a truly cross-curricular way. They are very appreciative of Tanya's attentiveness to their daughter, and assure her they will work with Rebecca as
she suggests.
Learning platforms aren't just about bringing hardware and software together, they're also about making communication easy, and bringing everyone involved in education closer together. Whether they're teachers, or parents, it's about sharing information and disseminating that information appropriately and effectively.
